The Board of Education believes that study\/field trips and excursions are desirable<\/p>\n

programs and activities for meeting student needs, as long as they are consistent with the<\/p>\n

purposes of the district. Further, the district believes these trips are voluntary regardless<\/p>\n

of status as district or non-district-sponsored trips. No pupil shall be excluded from<\/p>\n

participating the field trips or excursions because of lack of sufficient funds. Overnight<\/p>\n

trips must be pre-approved by the Board prior to the payment of any costs or fees<\/p>\n

associated with the trip. All planned trips away from school grounds, including athletic<\/p>\n

trips, over-night\/long-term trips, single-day trips, and outdoor education programs, are<\/p>\n

subject to this policy.<\/p>\n

Definitions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Study\/field trips <\/strong>are trips conducted in conjunction with the regular curriculum of the<\/p>\n

class. They are preceded and\/or followed by district-approved academic instruction. The<\/p>\n

terms field trips and study trips are to be used interchangeably.<\/p>\n

Study\/field trips shall be considered voluntary, though they are also instructive and<\/p>\n

planned as such with definite objectives determined in advance.<\/p>\n

Excursions <\/strong>are defined as a non-curricular-related voluntary trip, often used as a reward<\/p>\n

(i.e., Great America, waterslides, picnics). Excursions need not be preceded or followed<\/p>\n

by instruction, though study trip guidelines apply to excursions as stated herein.<\/p>\n

District-sponsored trips <\/strong>are defined as those trips sponsored and approved by the<\/p>\n

district (Board approves overnight trips for which a student can be credited with<\/p>\n

attendance for state apportionment, and\/or trips organized\/ planned by district staff,<\/p>\n

which do not result in any financial or personal gain for any district employees. On<\/p>\n

district trips, it is permissible to use school\/district supplies, resources, and<\/p>\n

communication systems. On non-district-sponsored trips, it is not permissible to use<\/p>\n

school\/district supplies, resources, and communication systems.<\/p>\n

Non-district-sponsored trips <\/strong>are defined as those trips not sponsored by the district and<\/p>\n

not Board-approved, for which the district assumes no control and no liability, for which<\/p>\n

students cannot be credited with attendance for state apportionment, and\/or those that<\/p>\n

may or may not result in any financial or personal gain for any district employees.<\/p>\n

(Example: Teacher takes students to Washington, D.C., during spring vacation.)<\/p>\n

NOTE: \u00a0Parents may not drive children to and from a field trip if the parent does not have proper insurance coverage or chaperone information completed with the teacher. \u00a0Parents who chaperone and drive students on field trips are considered school wide parent chaperones and if they are asked to drive on a trip, the parent MUST be able to drive multiple children. \u00a0Parents are not independent drivers for only their children<\/u> to and from trips. \u00a0<\/strong>Students who are excluded from field trips due to disciplinary issues are not allowed to independently attend the school sponsored field trips with a parent or guardian. \u00a0Students who are excluded from field trips, are expected to attend school on the date of the scheduled field trip or their absence may be considered unexcused.<\/p>\n

Students who are not in attendance at school on the day of a field trip MAY NOT attend the field trip. \u00a0All students MUST be present when school begins and accounted for in the daily attendance log in order to be eligible for the trip. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Overnight field trips shall be available for students in grades 4-12. Overnight field trips<\/p>\n

for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade must be associated with educational learning programs in history<\/p>\n

or science, or they may be to participate in approved competitions. Out of State<\/p>\n

competitions should only be scheduled when no comparable competition is available in<\/p>\n

California. High school trips to out-of-state, invitational sports tournaments may occur<\/p>\n

only once per sport season. Efforts should be made to attend invitational tournaments<\/p>\n

held during school holiday breaks to minimize loss of classroom instructional time.<\/p>\n
