It is also the time where we begin to stress out for multiple different reasons.<\/span><p style=\"line-height: 1.2; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">There are students who have lost a caregiver or a family member. Or maybe their parents have recently gone through a divorce, so this is the first Christmas of having to celebrate in a split family. There are ones that have moved here, and they don&#8217;t have friends to celebrate the holidays with. Perhaps they have moved too far away from their family to go home for the holidays?<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/ps-feeds-production\/inline_images_1701118514001-clipart.jfif\" style=\"width: 243px; display: inline-block; vertical-align: bottom; margin: 5px 0px 5px 5px; text-align: right; max-width: calc(100% - 5px); float: right;\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Children experience stressors just like adults. The difference is, they may not have the coping skills to handle these situations. As grown-ups, it is our job to help our children learn these skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">There are a variety of different\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">coping skills<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">, but typically they fall under one of these categories.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Self-Soothing<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">: this can also be seen as relaxation. It is what you do to help yourself calm down. It can be journaling, deep breathing, taking a warm bath, stretching, and the list can go on. The key to this coping strategy is that you are soothing yourself and embracing the feeling of stress and finding a way to subside it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<br \/><p style=\"line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Distraction<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">: this is when you distract yourself, so you forget about the stressor. Some examples are working out, cleaning, working, drawing, and the list goes on. Often, this coping strategy has to do with something physical that draws attention off the stressor itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<br \/><p style=\"line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Emotion Regulation<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">: this coping skill is hard to master but one that is very important. This is a topic I teach in classroom settings to target all students. Beginning with Kindergarten, students practice expressing feelings in a safe way. Some examples include categorizing your feelings into zones, gauging size of problems, talking your feelings out, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<br \/><p style=\"line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Mindfulness<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">: This helps children focus on the present instead of stressing and worrying about the future. This could be meditation, controlled breathing, 5-4-3-2-1 technique, and even sensory play.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">There are plenty of strategies we can use to teach children coping skills, but the key is to be patient.
