We work alongside teachers and parents\/guardians to help students develop socially and emotionally, and to help remove any barriers they have with learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is a<\/strong><strong> video that describes the role and responsibilities of an <\/strong><strong>Elementary School Counselor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wh<\/strong><strong>at training do <\/strong><strong>Elementary School Counselors<\/strong><strong> have<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elementary school counselors are master-degree level professionals who are trained to develop a a school counseling program to support students, staff, parents and the community. \u00a0The program is comprehensive, developmental, and preventive and focuses on services that address the academic, personal\/social, and college\/career development of our students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why would a student see a school counselor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Children may face difficulties, which can prevent them from doing their best in school. These difficulties can include school adjustment issues, stress\/anxiety, self-esteem, family change, grief, fears, or difficulties with relationships. Having support through difficult times can be essential to a child's educational success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does a student see a school counselor at Glenmoor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self-referral (grades 4-6)<\/li>\n<li>Parent\/guardian referral<\/li>\n<li>Administrator, teacher, or other staff referral<\/li>\n<li>Students grades K-3 are informed that if they would like to meet with me, they can request a meeting through their parent\/guardian or\u00a0teacher.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Please let me know if there is a situation in which you feel I may be of help.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What counseling related services does a school counselor\u00a0provide?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All professional school counselors are trained to provide these services in a variety of efficient and effective methods, including:<\/p>\n<p>Guidance Curriculum<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Classroom guidance lessons<\/li>\n<li>Parent\/guardian workshops<\/li>\n<li>Schoolwide programming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Individual Student Planning<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Short and long-term goal setting<\/li>\n<li>School transitions<\/li>\n<li>Consultation with parents\/guardians\u00a0and teachers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Responsive Services<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Small group counseling<\/li>\n<li>Short-term individual and crisis counseling\n<ul>\n<li>Please note that <strong>I\u00a0do\u00a0NOT provide long-term therapy<\/strong> and typically meet with a student no more than <u>8 <\/u>continuous times over a school year. For ongoing and more serious mental health needs, I am\u00a0happy to work with a student and their families to refer them to outside providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Community resource referrals (including longer term therapy services)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>System Support<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participation in school committees<\/li>\n<li>Program management<\/li>\n<li>Professional development\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Coordination of Services Team (COST)<\/li>\n<li>Committee involvement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What types of things do counselors talk with students about in class lessons and in individual or group counseling?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Career exploration<\/li>\n<li>Conflict resolution<\/li>\n<li>Focus skills<\/li>\n<li>Friendship skills<\/li>\n<li>Growth mindset<\/li>\n<li>Listening skills<\/li>\n<li>Mindfulness and coping skills<\/li>\n<li>Positive communication<\/li>\n<li>Responsibility<\/li>\n<li>Self-awareness<\/li>\n<li>Self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Self-regulation (emotions)<\/li>\n<li>Study skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How can school counselors support\u00a0parents\/guardians?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helping with social or emotional concerns you have about your child<\/li>\n<li>Improving communication between you\u00a0and your child<\/li>\n<li>Discussing family difficulties\/concerns that affect your child at school<\/li>\n<li>Making outside referrals to community resources<\/li>\n<li>Helping understand the\u00a0developmental changes of childhood<\/li>\n<li>Discussing concerns about your child's academic achievement<\/li>\n<li>Helping establish healthy routines for your child<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How does a school counselor manage privacy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your family's privacy is important to me.\u00a0What you or your child discuss with me is private except in cases required by law (when abuse, neglect or imminent danger is suspected).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How does a school counselor manage confidentiality?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An important part of the counselor and student relationship is trust.\u00a0<strong>One of the ways counselors build a trusting relationship with students is through confidentiality.<\/strong>\u00a0However, there are certain exceptions\u00a0that may require a school counselor to\u00a0break\u00a0confidentiality when working with a student.<\/li>\n<li>Confidentiality will be broken if a student shares that they are going to hurt themselves, hurt\u00a0someone else, or someone is hurting them.<\/li>\n<li>Confidentiality can also be broken if the student and school counselor decide it is important\u00a0to share the information with another adult.\u00a0 I do let students know that problem solving is a collaborative effort and there will be times we will want to include their parents or teachers in our work.<\/li>\n<li>All students are informed of\u00a0confidentiality exceptions at the beginning of the school year during a classroom guidance lesson. Students are\u00a0are also reminded at the\u00a0beginning of\u00a0every individual or group counseling session.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How does a school counselor manage parent consent?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If I am meeting with a student <em><u>regularly<\/u><\/em>, I will inform the parent of these meetings if:\n<ul>\n<li>it will not break the students trust,<\/li>\n<li>it will not hinder the counseling process, and<\/li>\n<li>the parent\/guardian's assistance is needed, or<\/li>\n<li>an outside referral needs to be made<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If I would like to include a student in group counseling, I will notify the parents to get consent to work with the student in the group setting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--column: i18je29f6c1oa--><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does an elementary school counselor do?
