Warm Springs Elementary School is among 356 schools named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education. This is the first time the school, which serves approximately 655 students in grades 3-5 in the Fremont Unified School District, has received this national recognition.

“I congratulate Warm Springs Elementary on earning a space in the national spotlight as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School. The school community can be proud of this accomplishment and its work to advance student academic excellence and meet each student’s needs through timely and tailored opportunities to be challenged and supported,” said FUSD Superintendent Erik Burmeister.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools (NBRS) program recognizes schools based on overall high academic achievement or success in closing the achievement gap among diverse groups of students. Schools are identified and nominated by their state’s department of education, and then may apply to the U.S. Department of Education for the award and undergo a rigorous review process.

Warm Springs Elementary is one of only 33 schools in California named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School.

Warm Springs Elementary was selected in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category, and was nominated by the California Department of Education based on student academic achievement measures and progress as measured by annual state testing. It is one of only 33 schools in California that received a 2024 NBRS award.

“It is such an honor for Warm Springs to be named a National Blue Ribbon School. I couldn’t be prouder of the entire Warm Springs community for the dedication and collaboration that earned this recognition. Our students are encouraged to develop a growth mindset, our teachers and staff model that growth while supporting every learner, and our families and PTA continually provide the support needed for our school to thrive. This was a total team effort,” said Principal Scott Iwata, who has proudly served Warm Springs Elementary since 2012.

In its latest statewide test results, Warm Springs Elementary students performed 94.7 points above standard in English Language Arts, and 95.9 points above standard in Mathematics, with 73.3% of its multilingual learners making progress – an increase of 12.8% over the previous year. Beyond academic measures, NBRS also acknowledges the work of school communities to create safe and welcoming schools for students.

As highlighted in its NBRS application, Warm Springs Elementary has a vibrant community and nurturing environment in which students are supported to be kind, respectful, and eager to support one another. The school’s families and PTA help form a tight-knit community that values both academic and personal growth. Together, students, families, and staff create a space where a love for learning and a growth mindset flourish, and every student can reach their full potential.

The school offers an inclusive curriculum that celebrates cultural diversity, with differentiated instruction that ensures each student is appropriately challenged and supported, with many support programs-including counseling services, tutoring, multilingual learner supports, and enrichment activities-to address academic, emotional, and social needs.

Warm Springs Elementary also offers a variety of extracurricular programs, including basketball, Student Council, art programming, and an after-school band.

“Warm Springs Elementary has a special character, built on always putting students first, along with programs developed over many years to enrich their educational experience and foster a supportive, inclusive community,” said Iwata.
