However, there are certain exceptions\u00a0that may require a school counselor to\u00a0break\u00a0confidentiality when working with a student.<\/li>\n<li>Confidentiality will be broken if a student shares that they are going to hurt themselves, hurt\u00a0someone else, or someone is hurting them.<\/li>\n<li>Confidentiality can also be broken if the student and school counselor decide it is important\u00a0to share the information with another adult.<\/li>\n<li>All students are informed of\u00a0confidentiality exceptions at the beginning of the school year during a classroom guidance lesson. Students are\u00a0are also reminded at the\u00a0beginning of\u00a0every individual or group counseling session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How does a school counselor manage parent consent?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If I meet with a student more than once, I will inform the parent\/guardian of these meetings only if their assistance is needed or an outside referral needs to be made.<\/li>\n<li>If I would like to include a student in group counseling,\u00a0I will call the parent\/guardian\u00a0to get consent to work with a child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Counseling Frequently Asked Questions What does an elementary school counselor do?
