{"id":191064,"date":"2024-10-05T08:05:27","date_gmt":"2024-10-05T16:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fremontunified.org\/warwick\/news\/community-feedback-requested-grade-6-core-novels\/"},"modified":"2024-11-19T09:16:04","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T17:16:04","slug":"community-feedback-requested-grade-6-core-novels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fremontunified.org\/warwick\/events-archive\/community-feedback-requested-grade-6-core-novels\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Feedback Requested: Grade 6 Core Novels"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Last year, Curriculum &amp; Instruction convened a team of 6th-grade ELA teachers to work on selecting core novels for Grade 6 to complete the secondary core literature collection.\u00a0 Each middle school English Department and SurfBoardE were provided the opportunity to nominate novels for consideration.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Grade 6 Core Novels Committee met on March 12, 2024, and reviewed the 15 nominated titles. They narrowed down the selection to five titles. The community is welcome to provide comments on the titles still under consideration:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>The Great Wall of Lucy Wu<\/em> by Wendy Wan-Long<\/li>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>A Long Walk to Water<\/em> by Linda Sue Park<\/li>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>Look Both Ways<\/em> by Jason Reynolds<\/li>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>The Misfits<\/em> by James Howe<\/li>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>One Crazy Summer <\/em>by Rita Williams-Garcia<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Community comments may be shared using <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScFVKtkLJ5B3xio05fYR1dCVhzzhRTMg24wBneJawKHNukfJA\/viewform?usp=sf_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this form<\/a> until October 25, 2024.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>In the fall, the committee will reconvene to select the final two novels that will be brought to the Board for approval.<\/p>\r\n<p>FUSD went through a two-year secondary core novels adoption process for grades 7-12 to create a collection of literature that provides students with a variety of genres, writing styles, time periods, cultures, and relevant themes from the perspective of diverse authors and characters, including historically underrepresented groups.
