Hopkins Principal’s Newsletter 10/12/2025

Dear Hopkins Families,

Many thanks to our parent volunteers for helping with last week’s International Walk & Roll to School Day. Students who commuted to school in an environmentally friendly mode were rewarded with mood pencils and snacks. 

Hopkins Student Survey for SURFBoardE: Our district’s Student United for Representation to Fremont Board of Education (SURFBoardE) is a group of student representatives from FUSD high schools and middle schools. They meet each month to discuss student issues and plan next steps at the district level. And they want student voice! We ask students to complete this Hopkins PULSE Feedback Form (Parents/Guardians – this is for students only. Students must log into their FUSD account to access the survey). 

Counseling Presentations to All 7th Graders: In this upcoming week (10/13-17), Crisis Support Services will visit 7th graders through their history class to present on warning signs of depression and how to inform an adult when a student has thoughts of harming themself or suicide. If you have any questions you can contact your child’s grade level counselor.CA Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill: On Thursday, 10/16, we will be conducting a full earthquake drill that included evacuation and staff members performing tasks in disaster response teams in this simulation. We encourage students to wear sunblock, bring a jacket, hat, snacks, as they will be outside for closet o an hour. Please see Assistant Principal Mrs. Moore’s email for details.
  • Lockdown vs. Shelter-in-place vs. Evacuation: Our 5th period teachers recently reviewed these with students during Read. We encourage families to use these slides to stay informed and talk with students at home about different emergencies. 
  • Counselor Check-ins: If you are noticing that your student shows signs of distress or anxiety, please reach out to our counseling team at their contacts above. Students can also request a check-in by emailing counselors directly or putting in a paper request at our Main Office.
After-school Arts Workshops: Starting in November, we will be offering the following 3 arts workshops to Hopkins students. If you are interested, please sign up here by the end of Friday, 10/17. Priority enrollment will go to students in Special Education programs, ELD program, 6th graders, and 7th/8th graders who current do not have an arts elective. We will confirm workshop enrollment in the week after 10/17.
Latin American Crafts Students will learn traditional craft techniques that reflect the diverse cultures of the Latin American region.  Tuesdays 1 day/week 2:45-3:45 PM
Calligraphy & Cursive: Traditional Handwriting and Letter-writing Arts Students will learn traditional penmanship through the study of cursive writing and Chancery italic. Students will also learn the timeless social skill of composing proper friendly letters, thank you notes and addressing envelopes. This hands-on course celebrates the lost art of personal correspondence while developing fine motor skills. Mondays & Fridays 2 days/week 2:45-3:45 PM
Art in Action for School Spirit Art in Action for campus Spirit and decor. Students will create cultural (holiday) decorations and signage for display around the school. They will also learn how to laminate, use a die-cut machine, rock paint, and tissue flower designs for our courtyard gardens. Thursdays 1 day/week 2:45-3:45 PM

First Social – Hawk-O-Lantern: Friday, October 17, is our first Social of the year. Students have received a survey from assistant principal Mrs. Moore to RSVP if they plan to attend. Please complete this survey to help our planning committee coordinate for enough food and treats! This event is for Hopkins students only. Students will enjoy pizzas, dancing, singing, face-painting, trick-or-treating, games, and photo booths! 
  • Students must bring their current school IDs for entry. If you have lost your ID, you can purchase a replacement ID card from Mrs. Loob in the office for $5. Replacement IDs for the Social need to be purchased by the end of Wednesday, 10/15. 
  • Cost: Students w/ ASB card = $0 to enter our Socials. Students without ASB = $10 per ticket.
  • Leave backpacks, drinks, and food at home. Pizzas and water will be provided.
Hopkins Social – Trick-or-Treating Tables: New this year! The PFA would like to invite families to decorate a table during the social for students to enjoy Trick-or-Treating!  If you are willing and interested to decorate a table and can set-up at 3:15 PM and take down by 5:30 PM on Friday, October 17 (Date of our Social), please sign up!

Hopkins Black Parent Union: Our next Black Parent Union meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 22 at 11:00 am via zoom. This is an affinity space for parents and caregivers of students who identify as Black to connect, share, and collaborate to support our students and community. If you’re interested in being part of this group, please fill out our Interest Form so we can keep you in the loop with upcoming meetings and opportunities. If you have any questions, reach out to Chasmin at [email protected] or Roderick at [email protected]. We hope to see you there!

Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences: Our teachers are coordinating parent-student-teacher conferences on Thursday, 10/23, 1:30-7:30 PM and Friday, 10/24, 8:15-2:15 PM. Priority invitations are going out to families whose students need a little extra support (those who have earned a C, D, or F in class, Multilingual Learners, and students with IEPs). Students who are earning As and Bs have shown that they have the skills to do well, and may not need a parent-student-teacher conference. 

District’s Cell Phone Policy Survey for Parents/Guardians:  The district is currently reviewing our cell phone use policy across all schools to ensure it supports a safe, positive, and focused learning environment, complies with California’s new Phone-Free Schools Act. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey  so we can make informed decisions that reflect the needs and concerns of our FUSD community.  Please note: a similar student (4th grade and up) survey will be going out soon. The survey closes on 10/24. 

PFA-Sponsored Programs and Events: 
  • Fischer Chess Club: Wednesdays, 4-6 PM. Start date is sometime in October-November, to be announced pending facility use approval. Please see here for signup information.

  • Girls Volleyball Game vs. Centerville: Tuesday, 10/14, 3-5 PM @ MUR – Students must bring their school ID to watch the game and earn Spirit points.
