About the Science Magnet Program

Mattos Elementary School is Fremont Unified's only science magnet school. We offer many enriching opportunities for students to "Soar into Science". These opportunities turn natural curiosity into unique learning experiences for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Mattos staff use approved district instructional materials which are aligned to state curriculum standards, but our additional enrichment opportunities can be found only at Mattos. We have a collaborative partnership with our local natural history museum, Math-Science Nucleus (MSN). This partnership brings science docents to our science lab once a month for all students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Additionally, teachers work closely with MSN staff and volunteers to study a specific science standard all year- whether it's weather and climate in kindergarten or composting in fourth grade. The units tie together from kindergarten to fifth grade. Our outdoor learning space showcases some of this learning and is a wonderful place for our naturalists. Mattos students in grades 1-5 also attend computer and science classes with a specialist. During that time, students may experience coding and robotics. Our Innovations Fair for 5th grade students also captures a students' interest for science. These are just a few ways that Mattos enriches the lives of our students with a focus on science.

Mattos PTA also dedicates a large part of its budget and energy to supporting science opportunities for Mattos students and families. During the school day and after school, our amazing PTA sponsors many special activities or events that focus on science. Our annual pumpkin patch, Astronomy Night, Family Science Night(s), and contributions to our Makerspace help keep our young scientists creating and collaborating.

Mattos is centrally located in Fremont off Mowry Avenue near 880 and is open to all enrolled FUSD students. Enrolled FUSD students must have a parent/guardian complete the science magnet application to attend. Spaces are limited. If your child attends a district other than FUSD, you will need to complete your school district's interdistrict transfer process, get approval, register in FUSD, and then apply for our science magnet program.
