Hopkins Principal’s Newsletter – 10/20/2024

Dear Hopkins Students and Families,

We are very thankful for our PFA’s organization of the Dandiya Night that took place on Friday, 10/18. We saw multiple generations of Hopkins families — grandparents, parents, current Hopkins students, future Hopkins students — enjoying an evening of dancing, music, food, and conversations together. Looking forward to more celebrations of our beautiful community toghether.

1st Quarter Grades Posted: Students’ 1st quarter grades were posted on Aeries Portal last week. Please take a look and communicate with your child’s teachers if you have concerns or questions, especially if they earned a D or F in any class. For students who earned a C, D, or F in a class, we also encourage parents to schedule a Parent-Teacher-Student Conference with teachers on 10/30 or 11/6 — you should have received information from your child’s teachers on how to book an appointment. We value our partnership with you to support our students together — it takes a village.

HAWK ON Assembly: This Thursday (10/24) is our first school assembly since the COVID shutdown! We will be celebrating our HAWK ON values and bullying prevention through magic and a laser show. Please take a look at this resource page to give you an idea of what the show involves and talking points that help you have conversations at home after the event. If your child has light sentivity or other health concerns and should be excused from the assembly, please complete the survey below by the end of Tuesday, 10/22. Thank you to our wonderful PFA for making this assembly possible!
  • The start and end time of the school remains the same on Thursday. Please see our Assembly Bell Schedule below for details:

First Social – Hawk-O-Ween: The fun continues this Friday, 10/25, with our first Social of the year. Our theme is Hawk-O-Ween. Students who plan to attend should complete the survey to let us know if you are attending (after signing into your FUSD student account).  This will help us order enough food and goodies.
  • After school:  Students must leave campus after school; the library will be closed.  At 3:45, students may return to campus and get in line.    LEAVE BACKPACKS AT HOME; backpacks may not be taken inside.  Entry into the social will close at 4:30 PM.  No student after 4:30 PM will be allowed into the social.
  • You MUST bring the physical copy of your 2024/25 ID Card (photo of an ID card does not count):
    • Students with an ASB card will NOT be required to pay an entry fee. You will enter the social by the MUR.
    • Students who do NOT have an ASB card will enter the social through the gate between the MUR and Music Building (next to the small parking lot–facing the creek). There will be a $10 entry fee (cash only).
  • NO ID CARD=NO ENTRY   If you have lost your ID card, see Mrs. Loob by Wednesday, 10/23. You can get a replacement ID card for $5. You also have until 10/23 to purchase ASB and/or get your ASB sticker.
  • Behavior Expectations: Students are expected to follow school rules, including Dress Code Policy, Hands-off Policy, and NO RUNNING/HORSEPLAY.  All students will receive a bracelet upon entry.  Any student misbehaving will have their bracelet taken away=Warning.  A student who misbehaves again (no bracelet) will be escorted out of the social.  Student will need to call parent to be picked up early.
  • NO OUTSIDE FOOD/DRINKS ALLOWED: All students will receive a food ticket upon entry, which will provide one slice of pizza and a treat. The tickets are color-coded (Yellow, Blue, Orange, Green). Students will be allowed into the food station by the color of their ticket (rotating basis) in order to avoid too many students at one time.  Eat a snack before coming if you feel one slice of pizza will not be enough.
  • BYOG (Bring Your Own Game): We will have two areas (one indoor/one outdoor) for students to play games.  Students may bring their own game from home (i.e. board game, cards, chess).  ELECTRONIC GAMES NOT ALLOWED.
  • Need to leave early?  The social is from 4:00PM-6:00 PM.  If you need to leave early, have your PARENT email Mrs. Moore ( jmoore@fusdk12.net) the following information  by October 24:
    • Your First and Last Name, Parent’s Name, Time You Are Expected to Leave
    • A volunteer will sign you out.  All other students will stay for entire duration.
  • Halloween costume is optional–must adhere to  FUSD Dress Code policy (no weapons, fake or real; no full-face masks/covers—we must be able to identify you).
  • End of Social:  Exit doors will open at 5:50 PM.  Be sure to arrange with your parent/driver/carpool where to meet after the event. Be patient and follow safety guidelines/rules.

Halloween Costume Guidelines: We want students to have a safe and fun Halloween if they choose to celebrate. Please follow these guidelines:

  1. No masks that cover the whole face or make students unregcognizable. Staff members must be able to identify students.

  2. Weapons, real or fake, are not allowed.

  3. Costumes that could be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, sexuality, heritage, or religion are not permitted.

  4. Costumes should not hinder your ability to participate in your classes; costumes may not present safety issues in the hallway.

  5. District dress code still applies.

Volunteers Needed for PFA-Sponsored Diwali Celebrations: For our Diwali celebrations on Wednesday, 10/30, we are looking for student and parent volunteers. Please add your name to this spreadsheet (look through the different tabs for areas where we need assistance) if you are able to lend a hand. Thank you in advance for considering!
