Extracurricular Opportunities:Â
-
Free entry to Exploratorium for our Latino/Hispanic families: This Saturday, 9/28, San Francisco’s Exploratorium invites our Latino/Hispanic families to celebrate the Latinx Engineering Day in the museum for free. Families just need to bring a printout of the flyer (English o español) for free admission at the entrance.Â
- English Buddies Program @ the Fremont Library: Our Fremont Main Library is offering a series of free English reading and speaking workshops for students in grades 4 and up. Students are paired up with trained high school and college students to practice reading and speaking. This would especially benefit our Multilingual Learner students. Parents/guardians need to complete this form and turn in @ the Fremont Main Library. Please see the attached flyer for more information.Â
-
District-wide Maker Faire: Are you in grades 6-12 and have an idea to solve a societal problem using Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing Technology)? Whether you are a visionary, a budding engineer, a business and marketing aficionado, or just have a really great idea – this is for you!
- Fremont Unified is partnering with the MSJ Rotary and Ohlone College to pilot a district wide Maker Faire with a focus to solve a societal problem through 3D printing. Although 3D printing and prototype development is an essential part of the project, it is open to any and all students in grades 6-12 who wish to participate.Â
- MSJ rotary has set up an online submission entry portal where student teams can submit their idea(s) to improve the world through 3D printing. Â The link is here – https://missionsanjoserotary.org/. Â All proposal submissions are due by Friday, December 20, 2024, the day we leave for Winter Break. Â Proposed submissions are in narrative form only. Â All proposals will be reviewed and 30 finalists will be announced mid January 2025. The 30 finalists will be challenged to create a 3D printed prototype of their project and to present their project Saturday, April 5, 2025 at a district-wide Maker Faire hosted by Ohlone (Newark Campus).Â
- All submissions will be reviewed and feedback provided, whether you make the top 30 or not, you will receive input on your idea. We hope to make this an annual event and to add technology beyond 3D printing in the future. This is your chance to affect change for the better and to be part of the inaugural event. There will be an esteemed panel of judges for the event including district, city and industry representatives.Â
If you have questions regarding this project please contact FUSD coordinator Dr. Lisa Burns lburns@fusdk12.net, 510.505.7300 Ext 67245. Rotary contacts Rudy Malanum customfittrainer@gmail.com and Jeff Severtson jeff.severtson@yahoo.com.Â
