Rising 6th Grade Students
Sixth-grade students at a middle school will have a six period day and use the “Core Model” for
scheduling. Some subjects will be “cored”
- English Language Arts and History Core (taught by one teacher)
- Math and Science Core (taught by one teacher)
- Physical Education (taught by one teacher)
- Sixth-grade Wheel (taught by one teacher)
The Sixth-grade adopted curriculum in math, science, history, and English is the same as it was at the elementary school.
- There are no honors classes in 6th grade
- Students can enroll in Accelerated math and honors English and/or science in 7th grade
- Current requirements for honors English and science enrollment are a B or better both semesters during 6th grade (subject to change- check FUSD website for up to date info)
- Current requirements for Accelerated Math are grade level or better on Math I-Ready in 6th grade (subject to change- please check FUSD website for up to date info)
Currently, all students eat lunch at the same time and do get through the lunch line with enough
time to still eat lunch.
Typically, Core classes and electives= 33; PE classes= 43
Currently, the 6th grade students share the locker room with 7th & 8th grade students
Secondary report cards are issued 4 times per year and are accessible in the Infinite Campus
parent portal. Students are issued a letter grade, not a rubric score
- All teachers at the middle school have Infinite Campus and Google accounts
- All students have Google accounts that can receive emails from teacher’s FUSD email account
- Teachers have the option to use Google classroom to post assignments
- Parent Conference days are also held during the school year.
Depending on their EL level, students may be enrolled in ELD Reading and Writing classes instead of the standard English 6/History 6 Core.
Students with IEPs will be placed in whatever classes the IEP team has determined best suits their needs.
Most students in sixth-grade will cycle through four different nine-week courses; Academic Strategies, Digital Citizenship, Lifestyle Essentials, and Innovation (not necessarily in that order). All students are enrolled in Academic Strategies during the first quarter.
- This course will provide skills to support success in middle and high school including: focused note-taking, binder organization, time management, critical reading and writing to learn skills, goal-setting and self-monitoring
- This course is modeled after AVID, a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college
- Students will be given opportunities to access and understand digital resources, and create a personal plan for informed use of technology
- Students will develop an understanding about: media balance and the impact of media in life, privacy and security, digital footprint, cyberbullying, news and media literacy
- This course was developed with Common Sense Media, a non-profit organization that provides education and advocacy to families to promote safe technology and media.
- Student will be given opportunities to learn about and develop a personal plan for developing healthy habits about: nutrition, fitness, stress management, mental and emotional health
- This course will use the Lions Quest Skills for Adolescence which integrates social and emotional learning, character development, drug and bullying prevention, and service-learning for positive youth development
Students work collaboratively to: develop design thinking and creative mindsets, discover their
particular abilities, talents, and interests in hands-on projects and activities, and work in cycles of
innovation to prototype, test, and revise products
All sixth-grade students will have access to student clubs, athletic programs, and Associated
Student Body Activities (ASB) such as socials, lunchtime activities, etc.
