August 2022 Monthly Message

Principal Thornley’s Monthly Message
Cabrillo Elementary Covid Vaccination Event

Good Morning Cabrillo Families!

Welcome Back to Cabrillo!
It has been wonderful seeing smiling faces of families on campus. I made a deliberate decision before the start of school to put away the sandwich boards with messages indicating staff and students only keeping our families off campus. The district decision informed by August 2021 COVID-19 protocols made a lot of sense as we returned to school after a year of distance learning. Last year Cabrillo provided weekly PCR testing to students and staff and monthly COVID-19 vaccination events to the Cabrillo Community. Add to that the masking protocols, emphasis on handwashing, and social distancing. It all made a difference and I cannot think of a better way to thank the Cabrillo Community than to invite you back on campus.

Back-to School-Night (BTSN)
Our Back-to-School-Night will be an online event. There are three three presentation times starting at 6:45 with primary teachers (grades 1-3). I will give my presentation starting at 7:20 followed by the intermediate teachers presentation which begins at 7:55.  The link from your teachers will be sent to you. The link to my presentation is: https://bit.ly/3ThkS5x

  • Primary: 6:45 – 7:15
  • Principal's Presentation: 7:20 – 7:50
  • Intermediate: 7:55 – 8:25

I look forward to inviting Jose from Mi Lindo Sinaloa to our Open House in April, 2023 on campus to make street tacos, something he last did for us in September 2019.

School Site Council
We need a parent to fill a vacancy on our School Site Council (SSC). The SSC assists with the development of a comprehensive Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) based on student data as well as makes fiduciary decisions regarding LCAP budgets. If you are interested in becoming a member of the SSC, please complete the linked interest survey.

Cabrillo PTA
Our Cabrillo PTA connects families, the school and our community by providing programs and services at Cabrillo.  For example, Cabrillo families joined us at 6:30 pm two days before the start of school for a Cabrillo Clean-up. This activity not only made sure Cabrillo was a clean learning space on Wednesday, August 17; it also connected families. When you are a member of PTA, you are an advocate for your child and for all children. You can go to the Cabrillo PTA Totem site to join.

Vaccination Event – August 31, 2022
Cabrillo is providing free vaccinations through our ongoing partnership with Bay Area Community Health (BACH).  I urge you to reach out to family and friends who have not been vaccinated or received their booster shot. Ask them to register at https://bit.ly/CabrilloElementary.

  • Low dose Pfizer vaccines to children 5 years through 11
  • First, second and booster Pfizer doses are also available for 5 and older
  • Moderna (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and booster) vaccine is available for 18 years and older
  • Second boosters are available for those 50 and older or immunocompromised individuals
  • Everyone must wear a mask
  • Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent to be vaccinated
  • Walk-ups are accepted, but registration is highly recommended to help reduce your wait time

If you need help registering for the vaccination, our Community Liaison Sara Portillo is here to help you.

We at Cabrillo are very excited to bring a new year of learning to your students. It truly is a new day at Cabrillo.
