August Parent Newsletter

Greetings Cabrillo Families:

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year!

The teachers have been busy preparing their classrooms for their incoming students. The Cabrillo staff of educators is very dedicated to their profession and to the Cabrillo community.

I am honored and blessed to be a part of the Cabrillo Family. As principal, I bring a passion for learning and a desire to be an active part of the Cabrillo Community. I challenge the students to put forth their best efforts every day as active learners and I challenge the parents to get involved. Volunteer in the classrooms and at school. Take advantage of the time at home to talk to your students and find out what they are learning in the classroom. I also encourage Cabrillo families to participate in the ongoing programs and events.

One way you can show your commitment to Cabrillo is through active participation on committees. Our School Site Council meets seven times a year from 4:00 to 5:00 on Tuesdays and needs four new members. Please apply by clicking the linked text School Site Council (SSC) Interest Survey 23-24 or going to https://bit.ly/3Yy0z71. In addition, please join Cabrillo’s PTA and show your support for their upcoming plans. Click the PTA Membership link or go to https://jointotem.com/ca/fremont/cabrillo-elementary-pta

Cabrillo also looks to the community for commitment to our students’ safety. One way you can support Cabrillo is to sign up as a noon yard supervisor. This is a paid position that ensures our students have a safe and relaxing lunch period.

Thank you to all families who have already successfully completed all Maze forms! Please make sure you have logged into your Infinite Campus parent portal and completed all documents in the online registration section under the “more” tab. Please have forms completed before the first day of school.

Please look for the monthly newsletter where you will find all the information you will need to be an active member of the Cabrillo Family.  I would also like to encourage the Cabrillo community to follow us on Twitter. Each year we have a running record of daily events celebrating the students, teachers, and parents at Cabrillo. You can find our Twitter feed on the Cabrillo website or go to https://twitter.com/CabrilloFUSD. I look forward to an energetic and successful year here at Cabrillo. Together we will ensure the success of our students’ future

David Thornley

Principal

After School Academy (ASA):

The After School Academy is back! Join us every day after school until 6pm for daily enrichment activities varying from STEAM, social and emotional learning, visual and performing arts, and more. Students in grades Kindergarten through 5th are welcome to apply. Learn more about ASA by going to https://bit.ly/3qvH2Yf.

Before School Day Care:

Cabrillo is no longer partnered with Right at School for before school daycare. We were expecting this day care void to be filled by the City of Fremont,  but they are unable to provide daycare before school starts. Students are welcome to come to school at 7:45 when breakfast is served in the cafeteria; supervision is provided by our dynamic team of noon supervisors.

Instructional Paraeducator for Kindergarten:

We have a 2-hour position for interested community members. The salary range is $26.12 – $30.95/hr. You can find out more about this position by clicking the following link Instructional Paraeducator job posting or entering https://bit.ly/47w7EJy on your browser.

IMPORTANT- Online Maze Information:

Thank you to all families who have already successfully completed all Maze forms! Please make sure you have logged into your Infinite Campus parent portal and completed all documents in the online registration section under the “more” tab. Please have forms completed before the first day of school. MAZE is Fremont Unified School District’s annual registration confirmation process in which parents/guardians:

  • provide required information for each enrolled student – such as emergency contacts,
  • acknowledge certain parent/guardian and student rights and responsibilities, and
  • access specific school forms/information.

Completing the MAZE process ensures your student’s school has accurate information, and allows families to view student schedules/classroom assignments and their teachers when that information is released in August.

MAZE forms for all FUSD students must be completed online through the Infinite Campus (IC) Parent Portal. The window to complete the MAZE process for the 2023-24 school year is July 17 to August 15, 2023. Please do not complete the New Student Registration as it will duplicate your student(s). Parents/Guardians should have received a notice MAZE information at the email address indicated in the IC Parent Portal.

Back To School Night:

Cabrillo’s Back to School Night will be an online event held on Tuesday, August 29. We are planning to follow the schedule below. More information is forthcoming.

  • Intermediate Presentation:  6:45 – 7:15
  • Principal:  7:20 – 7:50
  • Primary Presentation:  7:55 – 8:25

Support Cabrillo As A Paid Member Of The Team

The current salary is $16.80/hr for this part time employment. Contact the Cabrillo office staff and let them know you would like to join our team.

Parent Newsletters and Communication:

Parent newsletters are available online. On the second Wednesday of every month, you will receive a message via email and text providing a link to the Parent Newsletter. As always, a paper copy in English and Spanish will be available in the Wednesday folder sent home by the teachers. Access our web page at Cabrillo Website to find the school calendar and important announcements.  We update this page on a weekly basis so the most current information will be on the Cabrillo website. Newsletters are posted to the school website as well. Please check the school and PTA display cases outside the office for additional announcements.

Cabrillo School Site Council (SSC) 2023-2024 Openings – We Need Four Volunteers:

Cabrillo needs four volunteers to the SSC representing the community. Please apply by clicking the linked text School Site Council (SSC) Interest Survey 23-24 or going to https://bit.ly/3Yy0z71. The purpose of the School Site Council (SSC) is to oversee the school programs that include the curriculum and best instructional practices. SSC is made up of the principal, parents and teachers, and ensures that the needs of every Cabrillo student are met. The SSC monitors the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) Plan (see below). This group also oversees the spending of certain funds provided through LCAP (see below).

SSC is made up of an equal number of parents and staff. Parents are elected by parents, and staff are elected by the staff. These members represent the entire school community.

LCAP: Local Control Accountability Plan:

  • This is the plan developed to ensure continuous improvement of our school. We write the plan for Cabrillo and ensure that it is aligned with the district’s visions and goals. It is rewritten yearly to reflect the needs of our current students. It is available on the district website.

SPSA: Single Plan for Student Achievement:

  • This plan is developed to make sure there is ongoing improvement of our school. The plan is written specifically for Cabrillo on an annual basis to reflect the needs of all of our current students. It is available on the district website.

SSC meetings take place 7 times per school year. An agenda for each meeting will be posted on the website at least 72 hours before the meeting date. All meetings are open to the public. Contact Mr. Thornley via dthornley@fusdk12.net or complete the Google Form School Site Council (SSC) Interest Survey 23-24 to let him know you want to be part of the SSC TEAM for the 2023-2024 School Year.

Breakfast and Lunch:

School meals will be free for all on-campus students this school year. Child Nutrition is providing traditional school year lunches with vegetarian and meat options available every day.  In addition, free and reduced meal applications will no longer need to be completed. Instead, all households will complete ‘Alternative Income Form’ during online registration and/or at Maze Day. For assistance with your child’s online application or account, please contact Child Nutrition Services at 510-657-2350 ext. 12297 or email Johannes Van der Pool at johannesvanderpool@fusdk12.net.

Student Medication Policy

All student medication must be kept in the office. This applies to “over the counter” medicines as well as doctor prescribed medication. This is a reminder that the FUSD Health Care/Medication form completed by your student’s physician are needed every new school year. You may pick up a new Health Care/Medication  form from the office or go to https://fremontunified.org/about/instructional-services/student-support-services/health-services-overview/health-forms-medication/

All medications (i.e., Ritalin) will need to be counted by office staff and parents together before they are accepted. All medication stored in the office must be in its original container. The school nurse will review your student’s Health Care/Medication form. Further information can be found at the Student Support Services page regarding Health Care Medication Forms and in the 2023-2024  Parent/Guardian & Student Handbook.

Parking and Student Drop Off:

Safety of our students and community members is a top priority. Turn right on San Pedro Drive when exiting the drop-off/pick-up zone in front of the school. Cones will be in place preventing left turns. As you drop your child off coming into the Horseshoe off San Pedro Drive, please note the following:

  1. DO NOT make a left turn on San Pedro after you exit the Cabrillo Horseshoe.
  2. DO NOT jay walk across San Pedro Drive.  Cross at the crosswalk.
  3. When you walk your student in, do not walk through the parking lot.  Use the sidewalks.
  4. Do not stop/park in the red zones.  Red curbs mean no parking or stopping.
  5. Do not park and exit your car in the Cabrillo Horseshoe. Please wait in your car for your student.
  6. On San Pedro Drive, stay in one line.  Drive forward as the line moves.
  7. DO NOT block driveways of our neighbors or the school.

PLEASE be courteous to our parent volunteers and follow their directions.

Classroom Supply Lists:
