September 2022 Monthly Message

Good Morning Cabrillo Families!

Volunteering on Campus
It has been wonderful seeing smiling faces of families on campus. Now it’s time to see families in the classroom. We welcome parent volunteers to become valuable members of our educational community. You can help in a number of ways. Please contact your student’s teacher about opportunities to volunteer in the classroom. Before we can accept you as a volunteer, you will need to complete a CiviCore Application. When you volunteer on campus, you must:

  • Sign in and out using our digital system for processing volunteers
  • Wear a visitor badge at all times
  • Remain under the supervision of a site employee (teacher) for the duration of your visit

And that’s it. We look forward to having parent volunteers on campus and in the classroom again!

Coffee with the Principal
PTA is hosting a Coffee with the Principal on Wednesday, October 3rd at 8:30 in the cafeteria. This month will feature our computer specialist Mrs. Diaz-Centeno who will share all things tech and how they relate to your students. She will help you decipher the “walled garden” of Google Workspace for Education, Clever, and the web apps used by Fremont USD to support your child’s academics. These monthly sessions help connect community members with one another and give you opportunities to ask questions.

Free Internet Access
Our Chief Technology Officer Melvin Easly has shared a couple links that can provide free internet access to eligible families. Both ATT and Xfinity have programs providing free internet access to eligible families. If you need help applying, please contact our community liaison Sara Portillo.

College Savings Account
The State of California is launching the California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program (CalKIDS) to give children in California a jump start on saving for college or career training. Participants receive a seed deposit in a CalKIDS account to help pay for future education after high school. To be eligible for CalKIDS, participants must be:

  • Born in California on or after July 1, 2022; or
  • An eligible low-income public school student in grades 1-12 in California.

California public school students identified as low-income, as defined by the Local Control Funding Formula, enrolled in 1st through 12th grades during the 2021-2022 academic year are eligible to apply. Beginning this year, all low-income public school first graders will be automatically enrolled in CalKIDS.

  • Eligible low-income public school students receive a:
  • $500 automatic deposit in a CalKIDS account for eligible low-income public school students
  • $500 additional deposit in a CalKIDS account for eligible students identified as foster youth
  • $500 additional deposit in a CalKIDS account for eligible students identified as homeless

For more information about the program, visit the CalKIDS website at https://calkids.org/ or contact a representative at 888-445-2377.

Cabrillo PTA
Our first PTA meeting of the year was wonderful - We had a full house in Room 12 so we will meet in the Cabrillo Cove for the October 18 PTA Association meeting. Our Cabrillo PTA connects families, the school and our community by providing programs and services at Cabrillo.  When you are a member of PTA, you are an advocate for your child and for all children. You can go to the Cabrillo PTA Totem site to join.

Vaccination Event - October 17, 2022 at 2:00 pm - 6 pm
Cabrillo is providing free vaccinations through our ongoing partnership with Bay Area Community Health (BACH).  I urge you to reach out to family and friends who have not been vaccinated or received their booster shot. Ask them to register at https://bit.ly/CabrilloElementary.

  • Everyone must wear a mask
  • Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent to be vaccinated
  • Walk-ups are accepted, but registration is highly recommended to help reduce your wait time

If you need help registering for the vaccination, our Community Liaison Sara Portillo is here to help you.

Have a great Sunday Cabrillo. See you tomorrow as we welcome the month of October.
