What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Support? PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn. What is PBIS at our school? We have adopted a unified set of school rules. These rules define our expectations for behavior in our school. You will see these rules posted throughout the school and your child will be learning them throughout the school year. Our unified classroom rules, found in every classroom and non-classroom setting in the school, are as follows: STAR I am Safe I am Timely I am Accountable I am Respectful As part of our PBIS process, teachers and other staff members this to increase student learning and decrease classroom disruptions and reward students with STAR Bucks. We also acknowledge students at our PBIS assemblies with a STAR or Wolverine Award as determined by the classroom teacher.
WINTER STAR WARS CHALLENGE Grade levels, first-third, and fourth-fifth will compete to see which one grade will get the most STAR BUCKs between December 4th-20th AND earn a special game session on Dec 21st. Let’s see which students will be our top STARs!

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays
-Your Forest Park PTA Board 2023-24.
It is that time of the year again. For many the holidays are a time to gather; a time to share, connect and find comfort in the company of those we love. It is also the time where we begin to stress out for multiple different reasons. There are students who have lost a caregiver or a family member. Or maybe their parents have recently gone through a divorce, so this is the first Christmas of having to celebrate in a split family. There are ones that have moved here, and they don’t have friends to celebrate the holidays with. Perhaps they have moved too far away from their family to go home for the holidays?
Children experience stressors just like adults. The difference is, they may not have the coping skills to handle these situations. As grown-ups, it is our job to help our children learn these skills.
There are a variety of different coping skills, but typically they fall under one of these categories.
Self-Soothing: this can also be seen as relaxation. It is what you do to help yourself calm down. It can be journaling, deep breathing, taking a warm bath, stretching, and the list can go on. The key to this coping strategy is that you are soothing yourself and embracing the feeling of stress and finding a way to subside it.
Distraction: this is when you distract yourself, so you forget about the stressor. Some examples are working out, cleaning, working, drawing, and the list goes on. Often, this coping strategy has to do with something physical that draws attention off the stressor itself.
Emotion Regulation: this coping skill is hard to master but one that is very important. This is a topic I teach in classroom settings to target all students. Beginning with Kindergarten, students practice expressing feelings in a safe way. Some examples include categorizing your feelings into zones, gauging size of problems, talking your feelings out, etc.
Mindfulness: This helps children focus on the present instead of stressing and worrying about the future. This could be meditation, controlled breathing, 5-4-3-2-1 technique, and even sensory play.
There are plenty of strategies we can use to teach children coping skills, but the key is to be patient. Remember that every child is unique so you may have to try different techniques until you determine what is best for your child. Please reach out if you have any questions. Hope you enjoy the Holiday season!
