COUNSELOR CORNER

Hello Families,

Greetings from your counselor Ms. Kim!

This year “Start With Hello Week” will be taking place Monday, September 8th to Friday, September 12. This is a week for our school and community to feel more connected and for students to learn how to reach out to those who may be lonely or need support. It is from the Sandy Hook Promise to promote inclusivity and reduce school violence.

Through activities, dress-up days, and challenges, every student will learn more about how to be an upstander by helping others. Please say hello to someone new as you walk to school and be friendly!

Together we can make Forest Park a safe and fun place to learn.

Katie Kim
School Counselor

LUNCH DROP OFF

Place your child’s lunch on the gray cart outside the door of the front lobby. Please make sure that your child’s name & room number are clearly visible. For everyone’s safety, glass containers are not allowed.
Please exit the campus immediately.
In order for your child to receive his/her lunch, it must be on the cart before the following times:
Grades K – 3: 10:45 am
Grades 4 – 5: 11:15 am
Children will pick lunches up in the lunchroom; parents may NOT deliver lunches to the lunch areas or classrooms.

Please remember to label ALL items- lunch boxes, water bottles, jackets/hats…

FORGOTTEN HOMEWORK OR ITEMS
We will not interrupt teaching and learning with messages about forgotten homework or items as it disrupts the classroom. Our students deserve the best learning environment free from interruptions. Emergency information, however, will be forwarded to students; such as a change in transportation plans. Please try to make after school arrangements ahead of time. Forgotten homework or items may be brought to the office and left on the counter. Label it appropriately. Students will be regularly reminded that if they expect their parents to bring an item, it will be on the office counter at their next recess. Allowing students to call home from the classroom for a forgotten item is discouraged but left to the teacher’s discretion. We will not interrupt instruction and learning to alert a student that an item has been brought to the office. Arriving at school prepared for the day is ultimately a student’s responsibility.

INFORMATION REGARDING BOARD POLICY 6158 ON INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACTS
Short-term voluntary Independent Study programs may extend for no fewer than five (5) and not more than ten (10) consecutive school days. Only one (1) Independent Study per school year in grades K to 12.
The parent must notify the school administrator of intentions to go on a trip or to be absent for other non-medical reasons at least ten (10) school days prior to the absence. Thirty (30) days is preferable to allow for the approval process.
Students whose achievement is below grade level standards, based on multiple measures, in Language Arts or Math are not eligible for short term Independent Study. Students may not be on short-term independent study more than three (3) times while in Grades K-12. Students who have previously been granted an Independent Study and have not successfully completed and returned the work on or before the due date of their Independent Study, are not eligible for any subsequent short-term Independent Study.
There are no Independent Studies issued the first twenty (20) school days of the year. No Independent Studies will be given for any of the last twenty (20) days of the school year.
If you choose to remove your child from school without a contract, these absences will be counted as unexcused/ truancies and you will be receiving a truancy letter. Additionally, if your student misses more than ten (10) consecutive school days, they will be dropped from the roster and will need to be re-registered upon return, which may mean he/she will be overloaded to another school.

SEVERE ALLERGIES AT SCHOOL
Please contact the school nurse if your student has a severe allergy requiring medication(s) at school.
We have several students who are allergic to foods, especially nuts. When exposed to nuts, especially by eating them, but
sometimes just by touching nuts or their oils, or breathing their fumes/particles, these students may break into hives, or have their airways swell up and they could stop breathing!
Please help us to keep all of our students safe and healthy at school.  Talk to your children about not sharing their food, lunches, etc. with other students ever
