School Community
Washington High School has an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students, 81 teachers, 3 full-time counselors, 4 administrators, and a terrific support staff. Our student body embraces a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds with a population that is 0.4% Native American, 27.9% Asian, 0.8% Pacific Islander, 7.4% Filipino, 20% Hispanic, 6.9% African American, 33.7% White, and 2.9% two or more races.
A strong commitment of support from the Washington community helps us to meet our goals. This support is provided through a number of parent, student, and staff groups including: PTSA, Sports Boosters, Band Boosters, Fine Arts Boosters, School Site Council, English Learner Advisory Committee, African American Parent Group, ASB and an active Alumni Association.
Curriculum and School Programs
The school was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in March 2010, with a six year accreditation which extends through June 2016. In October 2006, we received a Small Learning Community Grant which has helped us better meet the needs of our students by allowing us to implement new programs, receive professional development, create “Families” in the 9th and 10th grades and begin work on establishing a true professional learning community.
Washington High School offers a strong core academic program, supplemented by an elective program including the visual and performing arts, world languages, honors courses in all core subjects, Advanced Placement (AP) courses in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, World Languages and Art. Additionally, we now offer the AVID program in grades 10-12.
In 2009 Washington High School developed a Multi-Media Academy which is a California Partnership Academy designed to promote career development and exploration for students interested in pursuing a career in art, game design, video and graphic design. Students and teachers in the academy utilize technology to apply high school learning to develop the skills needed to be successful in these careers.
Washington High School offers Naviance access to all of our students and their families made possible by a generous grant through Ohlone College. Naviance is a web-based software program with three powerful features: A Course Planner, a College Planner, and a Career Planner. Students are able to create a path to a successful career field by aligning high school course work and post-secondary course work that will give them an advantage in the work place. In addition, teachers are using Naviance with their classes to add depth and relevance to their curriculum.
Scholastic Excellence
Washington High School offers strong curricular and extracurricular programs. Our focus is on student achievement in all areas of life, including scholastics, athletics, the arts and social development. Since 2008, our API has increased from 736 to 784. In 2009, Washington High School was named a California Distinguished High School.
