About AVID

"AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society."

Welcome to AVID at John F. Kennedy High School!  AVID began at Kennedy in 2007.  Kennedy has AVID Elective classes at all four grade levels in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades.  In the elective class, for one period a day, students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college attainable. Their self-images improves and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.  Many Kennedy teachers have been AVID trained and utilize AVID strategies in the classroom.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a proven way for students to become college ready.  AVID strategies are also aligned to the Common Core State Standards.  Schoolwide, students engage in the WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) strategies.  WICOR = RIGOR!  We are committed to supporting all students in our JFKHS community.

Apply to AVID!  We consider AVID applicants for the AVID 9 and AVID 10 classes at both the fall and spring terms.  Please complete all parts of the application and submit to your counselor or the AVID Coordinator in advance so that your application may be reviewed and you may be interviewed before the next term starts.
