ACT – American College Test

The American College Test is a curriculum-based test that measures academic achievement in four subject areas. Most colleges and universities accept this admission test in place of the SAT Reasoning Exam. Students should check admission requirements for each college and university they are considering.  Please note that for the Class of 2021, colleges have gone test optional due to the pandemic.

What is the ACT test?
The ACT test is a three to three and one half hour test composed of four parts: English, math, reading, and science reasoning. The writing test is optional.  There is no penalty for guessing.

How much does the test cost?
Check the ACT website for current fees.  Fee waivers are available in the Career Center for qualified students. Students will not be qualified for college application fee waivers unless ACT/SAT fee waivers also have been granted.

Where and when is the test administered?
There are various testing centers throughout the state, and several testing dates throughout the year. When you register for the test the website will direct you to the closest test administration sites to choose from.  Register early to have a larger choice of testing sites.

How is the test scored?
The test is scored on a scale of 1 to 36.

When should juniors take the test?
Juniors should take the test in April or June.

When should seniors take the test?
Seniors should retake the test for higher test scores in September, October, or December. Some colleges, will not accept test scores past October, and some request that tests be taken no later than November. No college will accept tests taken later than December of the students Senior year. Check college websites for more information.

Is this test required for admission to community colleges?
No. Each community college has its own placement examinations. Check with each school for dates and locations.
