Principals Message
Hello Parkmont Families and Community,

I'd like to start our newsletter sending out my gratitude to all of our families that sent a message to staff members before our fall break. I've shared your kind words with every staff member. We cannot post all of the kind words here, but one comment seemed to sum up everyone's feelings, "I am truly grateful for the care and dedication shown by all the teachers at Parkmont Elementary School. Knowing they are in such capable hands makes me feel both safe and happy. Thank you for creating such a positive and nurturing environment for them to grow and Learn." I could not have said this better myself!

Also a huge thanks to all who contributed snacks during conference week. Everything was so delicious and greatly appreciated.

This month our character traits center around planning and decision making. Planning and decision making for kids involves giving children opportunities to practice making choices by providing them with options, encouraging them to consider consequences, and guiding them through a process of assessing situations, gathering information, and evaluating potential solutions, all while allowing them to learn from their mistakes and build responsibility for their choices; essentially, teaching them to think critically about their actions and the potential outcomes.

Recently students received their report cards., This may be a good time to encourage goal setting and develop plans to meet those goals.

Congratulations to our basketball team players. In order for our teams to play, we must have a volunteer referee for each of our games. Please contact me if you are considering taking on this responsibility for our Panthers. Below is information regarding this opportunity.

Thanks again Parkmont families for all you do for the our Panthers,

We Need a Volunteer Referee
My congratulations to our students who were selected for our Parkmont Boys and Girls Basketball team. A huge thanks to coach Steve for making this commitment.

I'm reaching out to our Pasrkmont community to recruit a volunteer referee. In order for teams to participate we must commit to supplying one referee per game. In the past we have tried to hire referees and have met with difficulties in consistent referees showing up and in meeting the expense of hiring a referee company.

We are no longer allowed to have people just "fill in" as a referee anymore as well.

We are asking if any parents would like to be our volunteer referee or know of someone that would be willing to referee for all of our games.

Our volunteer referee will need to be cleared through our Civicore process ) including Live Scan Fingerprinting, and TB Test) and need to complete online courses.

The time for the entire coursework is 2.5 hours. Here is the breakdown of courses:

  • Concussion Awareness: Full Course - 34 Mins.
  • Heat Illness Prevention in Student Athletes: Full Course - 17 Mins.
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest: Full Course - 18 mins.
  • Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Prevention: 23 Mins.
  • Mandated Reporter: Child Abuse and Neglect: Full Course - 53 Mins.

This is a significant amount of requirement to become a referee but our gratitude will be never ending.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are willing and able to be our referee. Again, we are unable to participate in the scheduled games without a referee.
See Something, Say Something Anonymous Reporting

See Something, Say Something Anonymous Reporting
As a school district, we are committed to creating and sustaining a comprehensive, coordinated effort to improve the overall safety and well-being of our students, educators, administrators, and the community at large.

This program teaches students, teachers, and administrators how to recognize warning signals and threats, on social media, in school, or in their community, of individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and Say Something to a trusted adult OR use its anonymous reporting system.

Our 4th and 5th grade students are being trained in their classroom on what to look for in text, video and photos while empowering them to act quickly to help a fellow student. The program also teaches students to recognize at-risk behaviors in friends and classmates at school and in their local community.

Students are also made aware on how to use the anonymous reporting system. We will be posting posters throughout the campus on this system.

Check with Mr. Lewis, Parkmont Principal, should you have questions.

Resources for Planning and Decision making
Since learning occurs best when it is reinforced at home, Ms. Angela (School Counselor) has provided these helpful resources to teach your children about planning and decision-making:
  • Video: How to Make Better Decisions
  • At dinner, encourage children to reflect on the decisions they made at school. Ask them to share how their decision affected how they viewed themselves, their classmates, and their school community.
  • At the end of the week, celebrate the caring, thoughtful decisions made by your children by praising them and treating them to a special outing to a favorite park.
Attendance/Absence Reminders
Just a reminder to all families that absences must be called in to the 24 hour Attendance line by 9am. Please call (510)793-7492 and choose option 7 to report your child absent. Spell your child’s first and last name when you leave the message. For extended absences, please notify the school office and your child’s teacher via email.

Important Note: Per Board Policy 6158, absences for travel or vacation are unexcused absences and are considered truancies. Students with consecutive unexcused absences of more than 10 school days will be dropped from enrollment and their seat may be given to another student on our waitlist. Upon return, parents will need to re-enroll their student in FUSD and they may be transferred to another school or classroom depending upon availability. To avoid this, for students in Grades K - 12, you may request an Independent Study Contract for non-medical absences of 5 - 10 school days. Per Board Policy 6158, the parent must notify the school administration a minimum of 10 school days in advance of the absence and complete a request for an Independent Study Contract. The contract request must be approved by the student’s teacher and the school principal. This type of contract is permitted a maximum of 3 times between Grades K and 12. No Independant Contacts will be issued during the first 20 or last 20 days of school each year.

LOOKING TO VOLUNTEER?
We love and really appreciate our school volunteers! Please remember that all FUSD school volunteers are required to be cleared through the Civicore approval process each year. You may start that process now so you are cleared and “ready to go” when a volunteer opportunity that you are interested in arises.

This link is for the FUSD website “Volunteer Opportunities” page. Please click the “Volunteer Opportunities - Civicore” button to begin the clearance process.
