Superintendent CJ Cammack, Rishi Gurjar and Shreya Ramachandran at the StopWaste Environmental Leadership Awards, held during the Alameda County Recycling Board meeting on June 8 in Oakland.

Rishi Gurjar and Shreya Ramachandran - American High School alumni of the classes of 2023 and 2021, respectively - along with Superintendent CJ Cammack accepted the award on behalf of the District, which in recent years has launched or strengthened various efforts to increase students' climate literacy, decrease landfill-bound waste, and limit the District's environmental impact.

These efforts are largely student-initiated, and are backed by the Board of Education.

As FUSD students, Gurjar and Ramachandran were leaders in the effort to bring Resolution 030-2021 Educational Response to the Climate Emergency to the Board for adoption in 2021; the Resolution declared FUSD’s commitment to educating students on climate change and climate solutions.

In 2022, the Board adopted “The Roosevelt Resolution,” a resolution championed by the Thornton Junior High School Energy & Sustainability Club, that outlines a commitment to transitioning to a zero-waste to landfill entity. The Resolution highlights the importance of educational opportunities that promote environmental stewardship as “essential to training up climate literate citizens.”
