Erik Burmeister Appointed as Superintendent in Fremont Unified School District

The Fremont Unified School District Board of Education is pleased to announce that Erik Burmeister has been selected as the District’s new superintendent. The Board voted unanimously to approve Mr. Burmeister’s appointment on June 26, with a start date of July 1, 2024.

Input on the search for the next FUSD superintendent was gathered through sessions with administrators, staff, community partners, and District families, and via an online survey open to everyone in the community. With feedback from partners in mind, the Board selected Mr. Burmeister from a distinguished list of candidates.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Burmeister to Fremont Unified School District. Mr. Burmeister brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership, and a proven record of success in navigating times of challenge and opportunities through a thoughtful and systematic approach to managing change, and a commitment to providing learners with transformative educational opportunities. The Board believes Mr. Burmeister is the best choice to continue our district’s mission to educate, challenge and inspire all students,” wrote Board President Yajing Zhang.

Mr. Burmeister has two decades of professional experience in Bay Area school districts, serving as Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Principal in Menlo Park City School District; Principal and Assistant Principal in Union School District; and Assistant Principal, Activities Director, and Teacher in Campbell Union High School District.

Mr. Burmeister was named the 2020 Superintendent of the Year for California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 5. In 2012, he was named California Middle Grades Principal of the Year by ACSA, and was a finalist for National Principal of the Year.

Mr. Burmeister currently leads Solutionary Advisors, a Menlo Park-based consulting firm he founded in 2022 to provide design, strategy, and implementation services to schools and youth-serving systems.

“I am excited to step back into the role of superintendent for Fremont Unified School District. I look forward to applying my experience and commitment to human-centered design to my work serving the students and community in Fremont,” wrote Mr. Burmeister.

Mr. Burmeister holds a Master of Arts in Educational Policy Analysis from Stanford University; a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Administration from San José State University; two bachelor’s degrees from Ohio University in Education & Communications, and Secondary Education and Teaching; and an advanced certificate from the University of Southern California for completing the Urban Superintendent Academy. He is currently involved in a number of organizations that serve students and youth, including as a member on the advisory boards for YMCA, Learner-Centered Collaborative, SRI, and TeachUNITED.
