September 4: Community Update from Superintendent Burmeister

Dear Fremont Unified Community,

Like many of you, I am tracking the unfolding situation in Georgia, where another tragic shooting at a high school occurred. Details are still emerging; I know you join me in holding that school community in our thoughts.

Whenever events such as these unfold, we understandably think about the safety and security of our own schools and communities. Like you, I think of my own children, two of whom are sitting in CA public school classrooms.

Please know that the safety of our staff and students is our top priority.  We are communicating with our schools about this situation, and we are in direct communication with the Fremont Police Department, our School Resource Officers, and our campus   supervisors to ensure increased presence and visibility today and will continue to do so over the coming days.

Our campuses remain open and will proceed with all planned events and school operations.

Please visit  our website to view information about our safety protocols, and each school’s annually-updated  Comprehensive School Safety Plan that outlines the steps the school will take in various urgent situations. I invite you to review your school’s Plan. I am also encouraged that the District’s recently approved    Long Range Facilities Plan includes physical improvements to address safety and security   at our school sites.

As your leader, I will continue to advocate for safe and secure schools, which also includes providing the necessary mental health support for students, families, and staff to access when the anxieties of today’s realities feel too much to bear.   If you or your student need support, please reach out to your school’s counseling and wellness staff.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students, staff, and community safe.

Sincerely,

Erik Burmeister
Superintendent
