Fremont Unified Recognized with 2024 Golden Bell Award
We are proud to announce that the California School Boards Association has named Fremont Unified’s Climate Literacy and Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) a 2024 Golden Bell Award Winner!
The Golden Bell Award promotes excellence in education and school board governance throughout California, and it was awarded to CLEAN in the Climate Change Innovation category in recognition of its outstanding work to coordinate the implementation of student-initiated Board resolutions on climate matters: “Educational Response to the Climate Emergency” (Resolution 030-2021), a “Zero-Waste to Landfill” commitment (Resolution 025-2122), and a “Commitment to Climate Change Action” (Resolution 021-1819).
Since CLEAN was founded in October of 2021, and at the direction of the Board of Education, Fremont Unified has expanded and strengthened its environmental leadership and partnerships, increased waste reduction efforts, and launched TK-12 climate literacy and environmental education that informs, educates, and empowers students.
This work is a collaborative effort amongst many District departments, with coordination through CLEAN to align efforts. At the October 23 Board meeting, some of the leaders in this work were recognized by Superintendent Erik Burmeister for their work in support of CLEAN, and stand as representatives of their departments and the many employees engaged in making the District greener and cleaner:
- Instructional Coach Nate Ivy, Curriculum & Instruction Department
- Public Information Office Laura Forrest, Superintendent's Office
- Grounds Supervisor Jeremy Schneider, Operations and Grounds
- Director Johannes Van Der Pool, Child Nutrition Services
- Recycling Coordinator Stephanie Willits, Business Services
- Director Ernest Epley, Transportation Department
The District will have representatives at the Golden Bell Awards Reception and Ceremony in December 2024 to accept the award from the California School Boards Association.
