Writing Assessment

Writing Rubric (Based on CA Language Arts Standards) for second grade is described in the following table. A score of 3 meets state and district second grade standards.

 

Score Characteristics of assessments earning the score
4  

  • Responds to prompt by writing a clear, well-elaborated paragraph that develops a central idea.
  • Demonstrates ability to organize ideas with detail and moves from beginning, middle, to conclusion.
  • Consistently uses extended descriptive vocabulary (adjectives, adverbs).
  • Writes clear, coherent, and varied sentences. Includes use of declarative, exclamatory, and/or interrogative words.
  • Shows correct use of punctuation, capitalization, grammar (use of singular and plural nouns), and spelling.
  • Handwriting is clear and legible.

  • Responds to prompt by writing a clear, coherent paragraph that develops a central idea.
  • Organize ideas in a sequential manner.
  • Uses appropriate descriptive vocabulary (adjectives).
  • Writes complete and coherent, sentences.
  • Shows conventional use of punctuation, capitalization, grammar (use of singular and plural nouns), and spelling.
  • Handwriting is legible.

  • Demonstrates some ability to organize and sequence ideas.
  • Uses few descriptive words.
  • Uses fragmented and run-on sentences.
  • Contains minor errors in punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and spelling.
  • Handwriting lacks clarity.

  • Demonstrates evidence that sentence structure is lacking.
