2023 Merit Scholars

Of FUSD’s 41 recipients in 2023, 39 per cent (16 students) listed Computer Science as their probable career field; no other career field garnered more than two responses.

Each recipient is a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition; seniors from each FUSD comprehensive high school were named among the approximately 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists for 2023, representing less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide. The City of Fremont garnered the 2nd-highest number of semifinalists amongst all cities in California (170 total, 169 from FUSD schools) – trailing only the City of San José.

High school juniors were screened for the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program through the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®); semifinalists are the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Semifinalists for corporate-sponsored and future Merit scholarships must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Scholarship winners also submitted applications demonstrating their extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions.

A total of 47 FUSD students were named National Merit Scholars in 2022.
