Building a Greener Future: FUSD Receives Arbor Day Proclamation

This Arbor Day, we celebrate a major milestone for the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD). Thanks to a generous urban forestry grant from CalFIRE, the City of Fremont and Urban Forest Friends have partnered with FUSD to plant more than 500 trees across school campuses this year alone.

We are also proud to have received an Arbor Day Proclamation from the City of Fremont’s Urban Forestry Department, recognizing the dedication and collaborative effort behind this impactful initiative.

To date, FUSD has successfully planted over 700 trees across 12 schools. These plantings are more than just enhancements to campus landscapes—they serve as a vital defense against extreme heat. By prioritizing areas where students learn, play, and gather, FUSD is creating cooler, more comfortable environments while expanding opportunities for outdoor learning and recreation.

This initiative is deeply rooted in student involvement. Through the “How Cool is Your Schoolyard?” program, students have used infrared thermometers to measure heat impacts on their campuses. This hands-on, data-driven approach ensures that trees are planted where they are needed most.

Beyond cooling school environments, these trees support local wildlife and contribute to the social and emotional well-being of our school communities. The first planting took place at Warwick Elementary in partnership with Urban Forest Friends on March 8, 2024. On January 11, 2025, FUSD launched its first planting event in collaboration with the City of Fremont.

This project has brought together local leaders, state representatives, and families in a shared mission to build a more sustainable future. In recognition of these efforts, FUSD proudly accepted the Arbor Day Proclamation from the City of Fremont’s Urban Forestry Department in March 2026.

Homeowners in Fremont can also take part in this effort to keep neighborhoods cool by requesting a free street tree through the City of Fremont. https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/urban-forestry/want-a-tree-form
