Placement Guide
All English courses have the following attributes:
- Follow a rigorous curriculum to prepare students for college and career
- Require students to work toward mastery of the Common Core State Standards.
- Develop critical thinking skills.
- Require students to write argumentative essays, narratives, responses to literature, and summaries.
- Provide opportunities for students to improve listening and speaking skills.
- Select novels from the same board-approved list of titles.
- Use technology to help improve reading and writing skills.
Honors classes differentiate in the following ways:
- Move beyond current grade level standards to advance skills.
- Required course reading is done at a more accelerated pace
- Writing is more sophisticated (more complex and varied sentence structure, greater depth of thought and analysis).
- Assigned readings are at a higher level of difficulty.
- Requires students to think critically and synthesize the material learned in class to a greater depth and complexity.
- Grammar applications are more sophisticated and complex.
The ultimate goal is for your child to be happy, healthy,
and appropriately challenged.
