Placement Guide

All English courses have the following attributes:

  • Follow a rigorous curriculum to prepare students for college and career
  • Require students to work toward mastery of the Common Core State Standards.
  • Develop critical thinking skills.
  • Require students to write argumentative essays, narratives, responses to literature, and summaries.
  • Provide opportunities for students to improve listening and speaking skills.
  • Select novels from the same board-approved list of titles.
  • Use technology to help improve reading and writing skills.

Honors classes differentiate in the following ways:

  • Move beyond current grade level standards to advance skills.
  • Required course reading is done at a more accelerated pace
  • Writing is more sophisticated (more complex and varied sentence structure, greater depth of thought and analysis).
  • Assigned readings are at a higher level of difficulty.
  • Requires students to think critically and synthesize the material learned in class to a greater depth and complexity.
  • Grammar applications are more sophisticated and complex.

The ultimate goal is for your child to be happy, healthy,

and appropriately challenged.
