Early Assessment Program — EAP for Juniors
GET READY FOR EARLY START
In 2010 the California State University Chancellor’s Office established the Early Start Program (ESP) for students who have been accepted to a CSU. The goals of the Early Start Program are to better prepare students in math and English before their first semester in college, thereby improving their chances of completing a college degree.
- Early Start is required for incoming students who are not ready for college level math or English.
- The program takes place the summer before the freshman year in college.
- Upon admission, CSU campuses will inform students how and where to sign up for Early Start.
- Early Start math and English courses are available at every CSU campus, and online.
- Financial aid will be available for those who demonstrate need.
How do you know if you are exempt from participating in the Early Start Program?
Math
~ These achievements will exempt you from the Early Start Program in math:
- Achieve a score of “Standard Exceeded: Ready for mathematics college-level coursework” on the CAASPP (CAAssessment of Student Performance and Progress, also known as the SBAC) in your junior year. This test is given in the spring.
- Receive a score of 570 or higher on the mathematics portion of the SAT Reasoning Test
- Receive a score of 23 or higher on the mathematics test on the ACT.
- Receive a score of 3 or better on the AP Calculus or AP Statistics tests.
- Receive a grade of C or better in a qualifying general education transfer math course at a Community College.
~ These achievements will make you Conditionally Ready. When you are conditionally ready you will need to take an approved* math course in your senior year, and receive a grade of C- or better in that course, to be exempt from the Early Start Program in math:
- Achieve a score of “Standard Met: Conditionally Ready for mathematics college-level coursework” on the CAASPP (also known as the SBAC) in your junior year.
- Score 520 – 560 on the mathematics portion of the SAT Reasoning Test.
- Score a 20 – 22 on the mathematics test on the ACT.
The following courses are approved* senior year math courses offered at JFK:
- Trigonometry
- Pre-Calculus
- Calculus
- AP Calculus AB
- AP Calculus BC
- AP Statistics
- AP Physics
- Any other math course with an Algebra 2 prerequisite, such as Intro to Statistics.
If you do not meet the terms as listed above you will be required to participate in the Early Start Program the summer prior to your first semester at college.
English
~ These achievements will exempt you from the Early Start Program in English:
- Achieve a score of “Standard Exceeded: Ready for English college-level coursework” on the CAASPP (also known as the SBAC) in your junior year.
- Receive a score of 550 or higher on the Critical Reading section of the SAT Reasoning Test.
- Receive a score of 22 or higher on the ACT English Test.
- Receive a score of 3 or better on either the AP Language & Composition Exam or the AP Literature & Composition Exam.
- Receive a grade of C or better in a qualifying general education transfer English course at a Community College.
~ These achievements will make you Conditionally Ready. When you are conditionally ready you will need to take to take an approved* English course in your senior year, and receive a grade of C- or better in that course, to be exempt from participating in the Early Start Program in English:
- Achieve a score of “Standard Met: Conditionally Ready for English college-level coursework” on the CAASPP (also known as the SBAC) in your junior year.
- Receive a score of 510 – 540 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT Reasoning Test.
- Receive a score of 19 – 21 on the ACT English Test
*The following courses are approved senior year English courses offered at JFK:
- Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC)
- AP Literature & Composition
If you do not meet the terms as listed above, you will be required to participate in the Early Start Program in the summer prior to your first semester at college.
