Science Is Important

Science education is more than just teaching facts about the natural world. It shapes how students ask questions and solve problems. For students of the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD), this means gaining the skills to analyze evidence and make sense of complex systems. Building a strong foundation in science is essential and it empowers students not only academically but also as informed citizens capable of making data‑driven decisions and participating in solutions.

FUSD’s commitment to science instruction

Recent examples of FUSD’s commitment to science instruction are its students significantly outperforming county and state averages on statewide assessments, and a team from Hopkins Middle School winning first place in the National Science Bowl (CBSNews.com).

FUSD has aligned its science instruction to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), ensuring reasoned progression from elementary through high school. For example, FUSD Elementary and Middle schools use the Amplify Science curriculum developed in partnership by the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley (affiliated with several dozen Nobel Prizes) for grades K‑8. The district has an adopted pathway curriculum for high school science aligned with NGSS as well. This structured curriculum approach ensures that students build deep understanding.

Science is a core part of the FUSD’s values and daily practices. The emphasis on projects‑based, hands‑on opportunities and real‑world connections. The district’s science magnet school at Mattos Elementary brings in science docents through a partnership with the Math Science Nucleus (founded 40 years ago in Fremont, this dedicated non-profit is committed to developing problem-solving capacities through science education), and students participate in coding, robotics, and outdoor learning tied to science standards. These project‑based experiences not only make science engaging, but also help students apply their learning to real situations, which increases meaning and retention.

FUSD works to support its teachers and student success. FUSD’s Curriculum & Instruction department maintains a dashboard of initiatives that includes mapping climate literacy, supporting professional development, and piloting new curricula aligned to state standards. The commitment to these supports helps ensure that teachers have the materials, training, and frameworks they need to deliver high‑quality science instruction.
