6/1 Counselor Message: Addressing Recent Events

We are struggling to process the many recent senseless killings of Black people in our country, including those of Tony McDade, George Floyd, Sean Reed, Nina Pop, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. Many of you may also be experiencing a range of difficult emotions during this time. We know that racism is pervasive and nothing new; it is simply being exposed more regularly through videos and social media.

As a counseling department, we recognize the cycle of recurring injustice. We are working to educate ourselves and others to actively practice anti-racism. The counseling department is building a list of resources to help our community advocate for change. We are by no means experts, and we welcome any knowledge, information, or resources that you find relevant. Please feel free to send this information to any counselor.

While we do not know how each of you are feeling right now, we want you to know that your counselors are here for you. For many, this is a time of grief and trauma, and it can be very difficult to cope with these emotions. For many, this is a time of uncertainty, learning, and navigating how to actively address injustices in our community. While we understand that we do not have all the answers, please know that your counselors are here to listen and support you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your counselor if you want to talk.

If you have preferred days/times to meet, please indicate these as well. Please remember that your counselors are here to help you. If you do not feel comfortable speaking with your counselor, please reach out to someone you trust. We are also happy to help connect you with another trusted individual.
