Community College Coursework
What to Know BEFORE Signing Up for Community College Coursework
By signing up for a community college class while enrolled in high school, students understand the following:
- Any coursework taken outside of FUSD is solely for enrichment purposes
- Non-FUSD coursework will NOT be placed on the MSJHS transcript, nor will coursework be used to determine level placement at MSJHS
- Students are responsible for researching and signing up for the coursework they plan to enroll in at the community college
- MSJHS has nothing to do with community college academic calendars and students must be mindful of the community college academic calendars/deadlines in relation to dropping a course
- Failure to drop a community college course in a timely manner can lead to a final grade of an F on the student's college transcript, which cannot be reversed
- Taking community college coursework in high school effectively starts a student's college transcript and must be reported on university applications
- Counselors will only sign off on a MAXIMUM of 2 community college courses per student per academic term (including summer)
- Counselors do not sign off on community college coursework for students until they have already started school at MSJHS
How to Request Community College Coursework
High school students must receive permission from their high school counselor or administrator before registering for any community college coursework. Students should do the following to formally request any courses:
- Apply to the community college for the appropriate term using CCC Apply. This must be re-done for every term they plan to take community college coursework.
- Look into the community college's program specifically designed for high school students, as it will have its own name, requirements, and steps to enroll. For example, the program at Ohlone College is called the Early College High School Program, while the program at Foothill/De Anza College is called Dual Enrollment.
- Have any electronic permission forms from the community college sent to the student's assigned counselor using their FUSD email address (Please note: Many community colleges explicitly require a "Principal or Principal Designee's" signature, which the counselor can provide).
- Counselors are not available to sign permission forms outside of school hours. Send permission forms in a timely manner (at least 4-5 school days prior to deadlines) and do not expect permission forms to be signed on evenings, weekends, or during school holidays/breaks.
